Stop Kiss tells the story of a young woman named Sara grappling with relationships, identity, and dealing with the trauma of suffering a violent attack after her and her girlfriend’s first kiss. The show explores the difficulty of coming to terms with one’s sexuality in a world where it can be dangerous to be who you are, and how we must navigate life despite that.

The action of this play took place in 3 main settings – the living room of Sara’s apartment, the hospital in which Callie lies in her coma, and the waiting room of the detective’s office. These were designed as 3 separate platforms that were always visible. The floor that they sat on was a representation of the grid of New York City, which we created by using several spatters and sprays to mimic a blacktop road, and then carefully measured and painted on the white lines using distressed rollers. For the woodgrain of Sara’s apartment, we did a wetblend of 3 different tones to get the base color; from there, we used a spatter-drag technique to create the grain. We then put in the lines to make the wood planks stand out, and covered the whole floor with amber shellac for that hardwood floor shine. To create the linoleum floor look for the hospital room, we did a very light spatter-drag with varying shades of gray over a white base.
